The HKBU BBA Summer Day Camp, held from 14 to 15 July, successfully brought together 65 secondary school students from 40 schools for an enriching two-day programme centred on social innovation, sustainable business, and social impact. The camp provided participants with valuable insights into how businesses can drive positive social change while developing their entrepreneurial skills.
Beyond fostering social innovation awareness, the camp offered participants firsthand experience of our signature experiential learning methodology - where theoretical knowledge meets practical application. Through interactive activities, students not only 'learned by doing' but also gained authentic exposure to university life at HKBU, experiencing our dynamic campus culture and collaborative learning environment.
The first day commenced with a welcoming remark delivered by Mr. Ryan MAN, Associate Dean (UG Studies) & BBA (Hons) Programme Director, and enlightening lectures delivered by Dr. Lucia FUNG, BBA (Hons) Associate Programme Director, Mr. Douglas CHENG, Programme Manager of Fullness Social Enterprises Society (FSES), Mr. Aaron AU YEUNG, Project Manager of FSES, and Ms Mandy Li, Assistant Project Manager of FSES. These sessions introduced students to key concepts of social entrepreneurship, design thinking for social innovation, and interdisciplinary business approaches.
The afternoon featured an immersive visit to Chungking Mansions for the Diversity Hub Tour, where students interacted directly with ethnic minority youth in Hong Kong. These meaningful exchanges helped participants understand the cultural backgrounds, challenges, and career development opportunities for minority communities, providing valuable inspiration for their business ideas.
On the second day, students participated in a dynamic Mölkky Workshop conducted by Inherited Sports, a social enterprise dedicated to helping young people from diverse backgrounds pursue careers in sports. This interactive session allowed participants to engage with coaches of different racial and cultural backgrounds while developing teamwork skills.
Under the guidance of Mr. Aaron AU YEUNG and Ms. Joyce KONG, Lecturer II and Coordinator of the BBA (Hons) Strategic Retail Management & Innovation Concentration, participants gained foundational knowledge about social impact articulation and pitching skills, learning how to effectively support ethnic minority groups through their business ideas.
The programme culminated in a business idea competition where student groups presented innovative solutions to improve social mobility and employment opportunities for ethnic minorities. The judging panel, comprising Mr. Ryan MAN, Dr. Lucia FUNG, and Mr. Douglas CHENG, recognized outstanding teams with the Business Sustainability Award (Group 2), Social Impact Award (Group 5), and Best Presenter Award voted by peers (Group 1).
The camp concluded with a special closing dinner at Eaton Hong Kong, offering students a taste of university high table dining culture. This final gathering provided an opportunity for reflection and celebration of the students' achievements throughout the two-day programme. We are honoured to have Dr. CA TSE and Dr. Clara KAN as our guests to share ideas and impact of social enterprises.
We sincerely thank our co-organizer, Fullness Social Enterprises Society (FSES), for their invaluable partnership in programme design and for connecting us with inspiring social enterprises. Appreciation also goes to the supporting social enterprises and their representatives:
We also extend our thanks to all participating students and teachers from over 40 secondary schools. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants confirms the camp's success in inspiring students about social innovation, sustainable business, and social impact. We look forward to welcoming everyone again at next year's Summer Day Camp.
